Wan(椀) or Owan (お椀) ("O "is a polite expression) in Japanese is a small bowl mainly for personal use. Owans are used in many types of dishes. Shiru-wan (汁椀 soup bowl) is the most popular and mainly used for miso-shiru (miso soup), meshi-wan (飯椀 rice bowl) is used for serving rice, which both are essential to Japanese dish. Owans are used in many cases with dishes that contain any kind of soups that you are to sip those soups from the owan directly. Owan comes in various forms and sizes especially in the Kaiseki ryouri (会席料理 course dinner), where many of them are used with a lid on top.
