In the old days, O-sechi dishes were the assorted foods that would last for three New Year days for a family so that the housewives would not need to make a dish for three days. In the case of O-sechi dish, each tier of O-jyu would contain similar types of foods, such as simmered foods, grilled foods, and marinated foods. They are placed in the O-jyu neatly and tightly so that the total presentation expresses prosperity. The use of O-jyu also has a meaning to stack the happiness of celebration.
