Yamanaka Shikki 山中漆器
- Excellence in Wood Work -
Located in Yamanaka-Onsen, Kaga city of Ishikawa prefecture, Yamanaka lacquerware (Shikki 漆器) has been manufactured from the late 16th century. Since then, Yamanaka Shikki has been especially famous for its superb quality of hand wood carving using the lathe. They are the main producer of lathe carved woodworks for many other traditional lacquerwares in Japan.
Yamanaka Jokan follows and excels this tradition of skilled work by hand. With the use of age-dried superb local wood, every item is designed to the thinnest balance of use and weight in the sharp modern form. Each piece is coated with natural urushi lacquer with fuki-urushi (拭漆 repeated urushi coating/polishing/drying for 6 to 10 times) method that preserves the look of base wood grain and yet giving a durable surface created by the urushi lacquer.
