Hyakki Yagyo — Night Parade of 100 Demons
In the ancient Japanese legend of Hyakki Yagyo — the Night Parade of 100 Demons — supernatural creatures emerge after dark to walk the streets of Kyoto. This is that procession, rendered in gold maki-e on black urushi lacquer by Wajima nuri artist Tomonori Yamasaki.
Each guinomi sake cup in this series depicts one demon from the parade. Together, the ten cups form a complete world — from the Blue Demon (Ao-Oni) and Red Demon (Aka-Oni) to the Biwa lute yokai, the mythical Kirin, and beyond.
The Hyakki Yagyo series is also expressed in a one-of-a-kind maki-e box by Tomonori Yamasaki — a collector's piece of extraordinary rarity.
